Pivotal Commware Leads Adoption of 5G Beam Modeling Specification with 3GPP

Posted on February 6, 2020 | Pivotal Commware

Pivotal is pleased to announce that its leadership in 5G network standards has culminated in the formal adoption of standard open beam modeling specifications within the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), the global standards body that oversees 5G.

The new specification is crucial because beam modeling is a core component of 5G and the 3GPP 5G standards did not have a beam concept within the “Network Resource Model” for RAN and Core network components. Without an open beam modeling specification, wireless operators could not conduct 5G beam management in a standard, open, and interoperable manner reflective of fundamental 3GPP principles.

The beam modeling specification enables operators, network equipment vendors, and technology providers to implement standardized, open and interoperable AI and machine learning-driven optimization routines as well as specialized, value-added optimizations while maintaining interoperability. Ultimately, multi-vendor interoperable, intelligent beamforming unlocks the full potential of 5G.

Pivotal’s contribution to 3GPP builds on its established hands-on technical leadership and thought leadership with other telecommunications industry groups as well as U.S. Federal and State Government departments and agencies.

Notably, as a working member of the O-RAN Alliance — a worldwide group of mobile operators, vendors, and research institutions whose mission is to lead the industry towards intelligence, open, virtualized, and fully interoperable networks – Pivotal led the effort to introduce interoperable “beam attributes” to the O-RAN Alliance’s open RAN fronthaul standard and specification. Pivotal continues to facilitate interoperability standards in the RAN industry to improve beam-centric network efficiency, effectiveness, and innovation for operators around the globe. Where applicable, much of 5G beam modeling improvement can and will be propagated back to standardized advanced evolutions of existing 4G LTE-based networks.
